چکیده
Predisposing factors [2] Conditions causing arterial emboli eg, mural thrombus following myocardial infarction, auricular thrombus associated with mitral stenosis and AF, septic emboli from valvular endocarditis, fragments of proximal aortic thrombus, arterial catheterisation dislodging bits of plaque. Conditions causing arterial thrombosis atherosclerosis (most common), aortic aneurysm or dissection, arteritis, decreased cardiac output (eg, from myocardial infarction or chronic heart failure), dehydration. NOMI hypotension, vasopressive drugs, ergotamines, cocaine, digitalis. MVT can be caused by: Hypercoagulability disorders (eg, protein C and S deficiency). Tumour causing venous compression or hypercoagulability. Infection usually intra-abdominal such as appendicitis, diverticulitis, or abscess, venous congestion from cirrhosis (portal hypertension). Venous trauma from accidents or surgery, especially portocaval surgery, pancreatitis, decompression sickness.

Multidetector computed tomography of mesenteric ischaemia
UNLABELLED Mesenteric ischaemia comprises a broad, heterogeneous group of diseases characterised by inadequate blood supply to the small or large bowel. Acute mesenteric ischaemia is a surgical emergency, with significant associated morbidity and mortality. Because the clinical presentation of mesenteric ischaemia is variable and often nonspecific, a high index of clinical and radiologic suspic...
متن کاملPatchy Small Bowel Ischaemia Secondary to Sepsis
Insufficient blood perfusion to the small bowel may result from arterial occlusion by embolus or thrombosis, thrombosis of the venous system, or non-occlusive processes such as vasospasm or low cardiac output. Patterns of segmental, skipped, or patchy small bowel ischaemia have been reported post abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and is thought to imply that microembolisation has played an impor...
متن کاملHepatic Portal Venous Gas: Comparison of Two Cases
Context. Hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) is a rare and sinister finding. Its mortality is associated with the underlying causative condition. When secondary to bowel ischaemia, mortality rates exceed 50%. Case Report. Two cases of HPVG are described. One case describes HPVG in association with gastric ischaemia, with complete resolution following conservative management. The second case descri...

The underlying aetiology of PCI, ie, mesenteric ischaemia or bowel infarction, is then the presenting disease. The natural course of PCI, except when it is secondary to bowel ischaemia, is usually benign. It has been suggested that gross pneumatosis and pneumatosis lasting longer than a few days also implies a benign course. Many cysts disappear spontaneously and may never come to notice. The d...
متن کاملPortomesenteric venous gas: A late complication of pneumatosis intestinalis
BACKGROUND The pneumatosis intestinalis is an entity with multiple aetiologies and may be associated with a fatal outcome when present on plain radiographs. When associated with the presence of portomesenteric venous gas (PMVG) it is typically the result of bowel ischaemia. METHODS AND RESULTS We are presenting a case of a 43 year old male who presented with a two days history of haematemesis...
متن کاملSmall bowel infarction mimicking Crohn's ileitis.
Despite the advances in vascular surgery and intensive care management, the mortality rate from acute intestinal ischaemia has not improved over the years."2 The advanced age of the patients, the toxic nature of bowel contents and co-existent cardiovascular disease may explain the high mortality rate; the delay in making the diagnosis also may be a major factor. Since there are no reliable labo...
